Molecular distillation in the resin and coating industry has made a transformative impact.

As demand rise for pure, high-performance materials, molecular distillation is the go-to method for producing high-quality resins and coatings.

Its unique ability to separate and purify compounds at low temperatures allows manufacturers to maximize quality while reducing potential degradation.

What is Molecular Distillation?

Molecular distillation is a type of short-path distillation that occurs under a high vacuum.

This process keeps the separation environment at low pressures, allowing distillation at much lower temperatures than tranditional methods.

The main advantages of molecular distillation is that it preserves the thermal integrity of sensitive materials, which is ideal for compounds with low thermal stability.

Basic Specifications of Molecular Distillation Unit

Evaporation area: 0.06, 0.1, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.5 ㎡, support customization.

Vacuum degree: max 0.1Pa.

Feed speed: 0.5 ~30kg/h.

Max speed: 300rpm.

Operation temperature: -90°C ~ +300°C.

Molecular distillation system is different from traditional distillation which relies on the separation principle of boiling point difference, but relies on the difference in the mean free path of molecular motion of different substances to achieve separation.

Working Principle of Glass Molecular Distillation

The material is fed from the top of the evaporator, and is continuously and evenly distributed on the heating surface through the material-liquid distributor on the rotor, and the film scraper scrapes the product into a very thin liquid film.

The interior of the evaporator is in a high vacuum state.

The material absorbs heat on the heating surface and escapes from the heating surface.

The free path of light molecules is greater than the distance from the heating surface to the condensation surface, collides with the condenser and is captured to form a new liquid flow. It is left along the condenser tube and discharged through the bottom light discharge pipe.

The free path of heavy molecules is less than the distance from the heating surface to the condensation surface, kept in the liquid flow layer of the heating surface, and collected through the circular channel at the lower end of heating surface, then it is discharged from the heavy discharge pipe on the side.

Why Molecular Distillation is Essential for the Resin and Coating Industry?

In the resin and coating industry, product purity and performance are essential.

Many applications require resins and coatings free from impurities, with enhanced durability and stability.

Molecular distillation helps meet these demands by efficiently separating volatile compounds and ensuring a higher concentration of the desired product.

For manufacturer, this results in:

  • Increased Product Stability: By eliminating impurities, resins and coatings have improved chemical stability and physical durability.
  • Higher Purity Levels: Molecular distillation’s selective separation enables manufacturers to achieve greater product purity.
  • Enhanced Product Quality: Products processed through molecular distillation often show superior performance characteristics, such as improved adhesion and durability.

Key Applications of Molecular Distillation in Resin and Coating Manufacturing

  1. Purification of Monomers and Polymers: Molecular distillation is frequently used to purify monomers and polymers, essential components of resins and coatings. By selectively removing unwanted byproducts, manufacturers can improve polymerization and enhance the stability of the end product.
  2. Solvent Recovery and Reuse: Solvent recovery is crucial for the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the resin and coating industry. Molecular distillation enables effective solvent recovery by separating solvents from resins at lower temperatures, reducing solvent loss and waste while maintaining quality for reuse.
  3. De-waxing and Deodorization: Molecular distillation also plays a role in de-waxing and deodorizing certain compounds used in resins and coatings. These processes improve the appearance and sensory properties of the final product, which is particularly important in high-visibility applications.
  4. Enhanced Chemical Stability: Many specialty coatings, including those used in automotive and aerospace applications, require high chemical stability. Molecular distillation allows manufacturers to remove reactive impurities that could otherwise lead to premature degradation.
  5. Improving Adhesion Properties: Adhesion strength is a significant quality metric for coatings in construction, automative and electronics. By producing high-purity resins through molecular distillation, manufacturers enhance the adhesive properties of coatings, which helps in applications demanding strong bonding.

Benefits of Molecular Distillation in Resin and Coating Production

  1. Enhanced Efficiency: With molecular distillation, manufacturers can process higher volumes with less energy, leading to more efficient production lines. This improves productivity while reducing operational costs.
  2. Environmental Sustainability: Molecular distillation technology reduces waste and minimizes the need for high-energy input. Its low-temperature operation decreases the environmental impact, especially when combined with effective solvent recovery systems.
  3. Improved Product Performance: Because molecular distillation minimizes impurities, resins and coatings processed this way have superior performance. End products typically exhibit enhanced strength, better resistance to environmental factors and improved longevity.
  4. Cost-Effectiveness: Although molecular distillation technology requires an initial investment, the long-term saving from solvent recovery, reduced waste and improved product quality make it a financially viable for many resin and coating manufacturers.

Conclusion

Molecular distillation in resin and coating industry is becoming an invaluable tool for producing high-purity, high-performance products.

By focusing on low-temperature separation and effective purification, molecular distillation allows manufacturers to meet the ever-increasing demands for advanced, durable and eco-friendly coatings.

As this technology continus to evolve, it will undoubtedly play an essential role in pushing the boundaries of what is possible in resin and coating development.
