Choose a parallel pressure reactor based on the screening job, not just on the number of positions.

People choose multi-position pressure reactor because one reactor is too slow for catalyst screening, solvent screening, pressure screening, or hydrogenation screening. Parallel systems are used exactly for that purpose.

For more information abour pressure reactor types and selection logic, start with the high pressure reactor guide. If your work is specifically screening-focused, it also helps to read the parallel pressure reactor guide first.

Start with the screening goal

Screening work actually needs four things:

  • compare catalysts
  • compare pressure and temperature windows
  • compare solvents or additives
  • compare process settings before deeper process development

If the chemistry is still too unclear and every run needs heavy adjustment, a single pressure reactor may still be the better first tool.

Choose the number of positions by workflow, not by maximum count

How many useful comparisons does your workflow actually need in one cycle?

Current systems in the market show a wide range.

A practical rule:

  • 2–4 positions often fit focused comparison work
  • 6–8 positions fit faster screening and broader DoE-style studies
  • too many positions can add cost and complexity without improving the actual decision speed

Check whether each position needs independent control

Some screening programs only need several reactors running under the same general condition. Other programs need different temperatures, different catalyst loads, or different operating profiles in each vessel. Not every platform gives the same degree of independence.

Hjchem parallel pressure reactor system uses independent temperature control and independent stirring for each reactor.

If the screening logic depends on independent control, confirm that early. Do not assume every multi-position unit works that way.

Match vessel size to screening purpose

Small vessels speed up screening, but they still need to represent the process well enough to make the data useful.

No matter how small of the vessel volume, there still need enough headspace, agitation quality, and sampling relevance for the chemistry.

A practical approach:

  • use smaller vessels for faster catalyst ranking and condition comparison
  • use larger screening vessels when gas-liquid contact, slurry behavior, or sampling realism matters more
  • do not choose the smallest vessel if it weakens the value of the screening data for later scale-up

Check agitation before you check software

In pressure screening work, agitation affects gas-liquid contact, catalyst wetting, solids suspension, and temperature uniformity. Hjchem parallel system uses independent magnetic stirring and magnetic coupling stirrer in each reactor.

Before choosing a system, confirm:

  • magnetic or other stirring arrangement
  • speed range
  • torque level
  • whether the system is suitable for clean liquids only or also for slurry-like work

If the process needs stronger mixing, that should drive the hardware choice.

Hjchem Parallel Pressure Reactor Model Options

Hjchem parallel pressure reactors are available in three main configurations: Model A benchtop, Model B compact circular benchtop, and Model C floor-standing type.

All three models are designed for parallel laboratory experiments, controlled variable comparison, and reaction condition screening. The suitable model depends on the required number of positions, reactor volume, stirring method, layout preference, and customization level.

Best suited forFlexible benchtop catalyst screening, high-pressure synthesis, hydrogenation testing, and condition comparisonCompact small-volume screening where magnetic stirring is acceptableMovable, more customizable high-pressure parallel reactor system for laboratory or pilot testing areas

Model A is usually suitable for most benchtop parallel pressure reactor applications, especially when users need flexible volume, stirring, and optional process functions.

Model B is more compact and is suitable for small-volume screening with magnetic stirring.

Model C is better for users who need a movable floor-standing high pressure parallel reactor with stronger customization and more complete process options.

Do not treat gas handling as a minor option

A screening platform should manage gas properly.

That matters even more in hydrogenation, CO₂ screening, CO work, and other gas-liquid reactions.

Before choosing, check:

  • gas type
  • batch charging or controlled dosing
  • whether gas uptake data matters
  • whether pressure drop recording matters
  • whether safe gas handling is built into the system

If the screening depends on gas behavior, gas handling is part of the core reactor specification, not an accessory.

Conclusion

Choose a parallel pressure reactor for screening when the lab needs faster, more reproducible comparison under pressure.

Do not choose it just because it has more vessels. Choose it because the workflow needs more comparison speed than a single reactor can provide.

The best system is the one that matches:

  • the number of screening conditions
  • the degree of independent control needed
  • the gas and agitation demand
  • the value of the data for later process development and scale-up
