HJCHEM stainless steel Nutsche filters(10L-1000L) are enclosed batch filtration systems designed for solid-liquid separation, cake washing, slurry handling, and wet-cake discharge in pharmaceutical, fine chemical, specialty chemical, and solid-phase synthesis processes.
Depending on the configuration, the same vessel can also support agitation, reaction, crystallization, and reslurry washing before filtration, reducing material transfer between separate process vessels.
Available materials include 304/316L stainless steel, PTFE/PFA lining, and PFA coating. Vessel capacity, filtration area, agitator, filter medium, jacket, pressure rating, feeding method, discharge structure, and control system can be customized according to the process.
HJCHEM Nutsche filters do not include in-vessel cake drying. If filtration, washing, and integrated cake drying are required in one unit, an Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryer (ANFD) should be selected instead.

Contact Material: SS316L, PTFE/PFA Lining or PFA Coating
The wetted material should be selected according to the actual chemical medium rather than only the equipment capacity.
304/316L stainless steel is suitable for many pharmaceutical, chemical, crystallization, and filtration processes.
For more corrosive media, HJCHEM can provide PTFE/PFA-lined equipment.
The allowable operating temperature and pressure of a PTFE- or PFA-lined stainless-steel vessel depend on the lining method, bonding system, vessel design, chemical medium, pressure and vacuum conditions.
PTFE and PFA materials themselves can withstand temperatures above 220°C, but the actual operating limit of a lined vessel is much lower. For example, some bonded lining systems are limited to around 80–120°C, while specially engineered bonded, loose-lined or mechanically fixed systems can operate at 200°C or above.
Pressure and vacuum resistance also depend on the vessel and lining design. Therefore, the final lining structure should be selected according to the actual medium, temperature, pressure and vacuum requirements.
Reaction, Filtration and Washing in One Vessel
A stainless steel Nutsche filter can be more than a standalone filtration vessel.
For processes such as crystallization, peptide synthesis, or other solid-phase reactions, an agitated Nutsche filter reactor can combine several process steps within one closed system.
Material can be reacted or conditioned inside the vessel, followed by solid-liquid filtration through the bottom filter plate. Wash liquid can then be introduced for displacement washing or reslurry washing before the wet filter cake is discharged.
Reducing intermediate product transfers can simplify material handling and improve containment when processing solvents, hazardous chemicals, or high-value products.
Filtration by Vacuum or Positive Pressure
Nutsche filtration is driven by a pressure differential across the filter medium.
Depending on vessel construction and process requirements, filtration can use:
1. Vacuum filtration
Vacuum is applied below the filter plate to draw liquid through the filter medium.
2. Positive-pressure filtration
Nitrogen or another suitable process gas is introduced above the slurry to force the liquid through the filter cake and filter medium.
Note: For adhesive-bonded PTFE/PFA-lined vessels, HJCHEM does not recommend vacuum operation because negative pressure may pull the lining away from the metal vessel wall and cause blistering or separation. Positive-pressure filtration or pneumatic diaphragm pump-assisted filtration can be used instead.
Wet Cake Discharge Options
Small units such as 10L, 20L, and 30L can normally use manual wet cake discharge.
For 50L and larger systems, HJCHEM generally recommends a lifting trolley and wet cake collection tray. The trolley raises the tray to the vessel discharge height, making wet cake collection easier and reducing manual handling.
The discharge arrangement can be customized according to cake weight, material properties, equipment height, and site layout.
Nutsche Filter vs Nutsche Filter Dryer
A Nutsche filter and an Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryer (ANFD) are related but should not be treated as the same equipment.
| Function | Nutsche Filter | ANFD / Filter Dryer |
|---|---|---|
| Solid-liquid filtration | Yes | Yes |
| Cake washing | Yes | Yes |
| Reslurry washing | Optional | Yes |
| Agitation | Optional / model dependent | Yes |
| Reaction | Available on reactor configurations | Process dependent |
| Wet-cake discharge | Yes | Yes |
| In-vessel cake drying | No | Yes |
If the process only requires filtration, washing, and wet-cake discharge, a Nutsche filter is usually the simpler solution.
If the final filter cake must also be dried inside the same sealed vessel, an ANFD or Nutsche Filter Dryer should be specified from the beginning.
Typical Applications
HJCHEM stainless steel Nutsche filters can be customized for:
- API and pharmaceutical intermediate filtration
- Fine and specialty chemicals
- Crystallization
- Catalyst recovery
- Corrosive slurry filtration
- Peptide and SPPS processing
- Solid-phase synthesis
- Resin washing and filtration
- Product purification
- Solvent-containing processes requiring enclosed filtration
For laboratory or pilot processes where process visibility is important, our glass Nutsche filters(500ml-100L) provide an alternative to stainless steel systems.
